WINNING MOVES |
According to the CDC, the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends developmental and behavioral
screening for all children during regular well-child visits at ages
9 month, 18 month, and 30 month. It is also recommended children
are screened at 18 and 24 months specifically for Autism Spectrum
Disorder. What is a developmental milestone and screening and why should I get one for my child? Have you looked at your child in deep thought and asked yourself “Why isn’t my child smiling at me when I smile at them? Or Why isn’t my child walking at 2 years old or Why does the teacher keep telling me my child is hitting other children or Why is my child so bad?” The answer could be found in completing a developmental screening. Developmental screenings are used to identify problems or delays during normal childhood development. The screening is a great tool to know what age specific milestones have been achieved (walking, playing with others, controlling emotions, etc.) and allows professionals to assist you in effectively identifying specialized areas that need additional attention and interventions. By identifying those detailed areas early in a child’s first 5 years of life or before they start school is essential in making sure the child is off to a winning start towards achieving success in language skills, fine & gross motor skills, problem solving skills, social emotional skills, and personal social skills.
